Julia Bünnagel:   Skulpturen, 25.5. - 17.6.2001

Julia Buennagel's sculptural works are site-specific installations that conquer the space they are exhibited in. The single sculptures remind in their visual appearance of cocoons that are creeping and settling on the walls, on the edges and in the corners of their surroundings. The idea of the cocoon implies a kernel or a containment, it evokes the feeling that a living creature is growing inside and will escape its wrap at a certain moment. Nobody knows to say what this creature will be or look like and its irritating expectation is stressed by the fact that the horns sitting on the cocoon's surfaces seem to be generated in order to protect the contents and to defend its vulnerability from attacks. Though the used material is completely industrial and artificial the sculptural form is very organic and extremely natural. The monochromatic and hermetic body is fascinating the viewer with its attractivecontrast between aggressiveness and vulnerability and becomes a symbol for people's ideas about the otherness of nature. Its energetic intensity is terrifying and evoking passion at the same time.
